Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Dogma of Mary’s Assumption of body and soul into heaven on the 1st of November, 1950:

“We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” (Pope Pius XII; Munificentissimus Deus).

We remember Mother Mary’s extraordinary role in the life of Jesus and her devoted discipleship as we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This occasion commemorates the ascent of Mary’s body and soul into heaven. Her spiritual connection to Jesus Christ serves as an example of following her footsteps in ascending toward a deeper relationship with God.

Mary’s spiritual devotion began when the angel Gabriel visited her. Her response to the annunciation “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) showcases her complete surrender to God’s path. Along the way, Mary remained steadfast even while she stood at the foot of the cross, witnessing her beloved son's death and resurrection. Mary's discipleship at this moment of profound suffering exemplifies the depth of her devotion to Jesus.

Mary's obedience to God especially during challenging circumstances, reflects her deep trust and unwavering faith. Concurrently, she is a role model in portraying humility reminding us true discipleship of selflessness. Just like Mary’s resounding “yes”, we too are called to respond to God’s discipleship with complete faith. This Assumption, let’s pursue prayers, faith, humility, and obedience to deepen our relationship with God and follow the teachings of Jesus, just like Mother Mary.
