Youths Explore Vocation at S.C.A.N

In a powerful display of faith and discovery, the Church of the Good Shepherd, Setapak, recently partnered with ASAYO to host S.C.A.N.—a transformative vocation programme for the next generation. The event brought together 250 enthusiastic youths and 37 lay collaborators, centred around four spiritual pillars: Seek, Charism, Accept, and Navigate.

The day featured insightful breakout sessions and a moving Holy Hour, all aimed at helping participants explore the priesthood and religious life. Archbishop Julian Leow presided over the culminating Mass, during which Fr. Michel Dass delivered an inspiring message: do not fear failure in discernment. He encouraged the youth to trust God's guidance over their own anxieties.

With support from Parish Priest Fr. Mitchell Anthony, Vocation Director Fr. Simon Labrooy, and various religious brothers and sisters, the event provided a rare, personal insight into consecrated life. The journey doesn't end here; participants are already looking forward to a follow-up retreat to continue their spiritual exploration.

Archbishop Julian Addresses Over 600 PDRM Personnel at St. John's Cathedral

In conjunction with the 219th Police Day Anniversary 2026, Archbishop Julian Leow concelebrated Mass with Fr Gerard Theraviam at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for over 600 Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) personnel. The prelate posed a thought-provoking question: "Are you a police officer who is a Christian, or a Christian who is a police officer?" He emphasised the importance of identity and integrity, urging the officers to allow their faith to guide their actions and reminding them that true character is defined not by their uniform, but by their moral convictions.

Drawing from his studies in Rome, the Archbishop highlighted the significance of staying true to one's primary calling. He encouraged the officers to reflect this identity in their conduct and decision-making. The gathering, which also included Minister YB Hannah Yeoh and DCP Datuk Dennis Lim (JSJ Bukit Aman), included prayers for protection, unity, and strength, reaffirming the essential role of integrity in serving the nation

Prison Outreach Mission

Twice a year, priests and volunteers from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, as well as the Dioceses of Penang and Malacca, visit local prisons during Easter and Christmas. These missions offer Catholic inmates the opportunity for confession and Holy Mass. Recently, Archbishop Julian participated in an event hosted by the Catholic Prison Fellowship Association (CPFA) at Bentong Prison, where he celebrated Mass, distributed essential hygiene supplies, and provided spiritual encouragement. Also present at the event were Fr Terrence Thomas, Fr Clement Lim, Sr Patimmah, and the CPFA volunteers. The Church of Divine Mercy in Shah Alam hosted its inaugural Divine Mercy Conference, titled "Into the Rays of Mercy." This three-day event attracted 140 participants, who were enriched by talks from Fr. Prospero V. Tenorio (Secretary General for Divine Mercy Asia), Fr. Nap Baltazar (Assistant Secretary General of the World Apostolic Congress on Mercy (WACOM) Asia), Fr. Michael Raymond, OFM Cap (Parish Priest of the Church of the Divine Mercy, Penang), and Fr. A cohort of 30 students from the Distance Education Programme in Theology (DEPTh 3) recently participated in a formation session led by Fr. Gerard Theraviam and Fr. Michael Cheah from the Diocese of Penang. The sessions focused on the Psalms and the Sacraments of Initiation.

Participants explored how the Psalms express emotions like sorrow and trust, learning to use them into their daily prayers. They also studied the Sacraments, with a focus on Baptism as a new beginning and the Eucharist as the centre of their faith. Beyond the classroom, students from across Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak enjoyed connecting with one another and sharing their faith journeys.

In celebration of the Jubilee Year of St. Francis of Assisi, the Archdiocesan Prayer Ministry organised a solemn outdoor Way of the Cross at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Cheras. Seventy-two participants from across generations gathered in prayer, taking turns to carry the wooden crosses from station to station, offering heartfelt intentions in a spirit of devotion and reflection.

The prayerful journey was led by visiting priest Fr. Mark Steven from India together with Fr. Andrew Manickam. At the Portiuncula Chapel, participants placed their prayer petitions on the altar, entrusting their needs to God. The evening concluded with an enriching sharing by Fr. Andrew, who reflected on the history of the San Damiano Cross and the significance of St. Francis’s beloved chapel.

At the Church of the Visitation in Seremban, Archbishop Julian Leow led approximately 1,800 faithful in the solemn Chrism Mass. This sacred liturgy provided the laity with a glimpse of diocesan unity as clergy from across the archdiocese gathered to reaffirm their vows of obedience and chastity. A central highlight was the Consecration of the Holy Oils, during which the archbishop symbolically breathed over the Sacred Chrism to invoke the Holy Spirit, an act that signifies life, sanctification, and mission. On the third Sunday of Lent, the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Klang joined parishes throughout the archdiocese to celebrate the First Scrutiny for the RCIA Elect. A Living Symbol of Faith: The Salib Handover

Albet Arockiasamy presented Bunga Raya plants to Deacon Philip Asirwalam and his team. These plants, which represent Malaysia's national flower and are featured on the Salib, serve as a living memorial. Deacon Philip then planted these flowers at St. John Marie Vianney, reaffirming the parish's commitment to the pillars of family, church, ecology, and society. The journey continued in Shah Alam, where the cross was reassembled, and participants crafted palm leaf crosses to begin the next chapter.

What does it mean to navigate the world without sight? At the "Giving Up Your Sight" event, 38 participants experienced this reality firsthand. Organised by AOHD in collaboration with the Parish Integral Human Development Ministry of the Church of St. Joseph, Sentul, the evening invited the community to step into the lives of those who are visually impaired.

In partnership with the National Council for the Blind Malaysia (NCBM) and Eagle's Wing, participants embraced the Lenten call to empathy and solidarity. Activities included dining in darkness, learning the basics of Braille, and reflecting on the barriers faced by visually impaired individuals.

The ninth and final Lenten Campaign 2026 Briefing Roadshow held at Cahaysuara KL, was specially set for those who may have missed the previous sessions held in the eight districts in the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur. A small group of participants from various parishes attended, and were happy to be able to spend some quality time enquiring about the Lent programmes and resources available from the Archdiocese, and about the works of the ministries.

An online Zoom briefing session was also held simultaneously by the Mandarin presenter for those unable to attend in person. The Prison Ministry Coordinator Gnadass, and Ministry of the Poor Coordinator Aaron, were also in attendance to answer queries and inform participants about their ministry and programmes. Synodal Formation Journey Continues

The synodal journey continues to gather momentum within our community, building on the strong foundation established during the first formation session conducted in English by Fr Dr Clarence Devadass on 3 and 4 November 2025, which drew 120 participants.

This was followed by fruitful formation sessions in Mandarin, led by Michael Sew, and in Bahasa Malaysia, facilitated by Elena Woo and Gregory Pravin Rajah, with over 50 and 40 participants attending respectively. These multilingual sessions reflect the richness and diversity of our local Church.

As the journey moves into the implementation phase, the next formation session will be held in Tamil by Fr Selva on 3 and 4 March, with additional training on the pathways outlined in the Final Document to follow.

These sessions remind us that the synodal journey began not with a committee, but with Baptism, through which we are commissioned into the Body of Christ. Guided by the sensus fidei (sense of faith) and the grace of the Holy Spirit, we continue to grow from personal reflection into communal discernment, embracing our shared calling as missionary disciples walking and growing together.

The Jubilee Year of Hope, proclaimed by Pope Francis, was far more than a commemorative season. It was a heartfelt call to awaken hope in a world wounded by conflict, division, and fear. At its center stood a simple yet powerful truth: our hope is alive and unshakable because it is rooted in Jesus Christ, whose love never fails and whose mercy continually renews the human heart.

Throughout the Jubilee, families, young people, the elderly, and those on the margins were welcomed and celebrated. These gatherings were not merely events on a calendar; they were encounters, moments where faith was rekindled, burdens were lifted, and people rediscovered that they truly belong to God and to one another. Many experienced forgiveness, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose, realizing that no life is forgotten and no struggle is invisible to God.

As the Jubilee Year of Hope comes to its close, its mission does not end, it begins anew. This is the moment to carry its spirit into our homes, workplaces, parishes, and communities. Hope must become a daily choice: choosing compassion over indifference, unity over division, courage over fear. It invites us to be creative in love, bold in faith, and steadfast even in trials.

Homily at the Pilgrimage of Hope 2025, Minor Basilica of St. Anne, Penang

Penang, Malaysia - The Minor Basilica of St. Anne became the heart of Asia's faithful as 800 delegates representing 30 countries gathered for the Pilgrimage of Hope 2025, a celebration of shared mission and future.

The Holy Mass celebrated by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, whose message of hope and vigilance inspired pilgrims to continue their journey with Christ toward the fulfillment of God's promise.

Cardinal Tagle began by expressing joy at seeing “faces of people who journey with us in Asia,” noting that the pilgrimage was not only for Asia but for the whole world.

He reminded the assembly that the Church is setting its sights on the year 2033, the 2000th anniversary of the Paschal Mystery, the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, which marked the beginning of Christian mission.

A Community of Pilgrims in Confusion

Reflecting on the first reading from the Book of Daniel, Cardinal Tagle highlighted the prophet’s role as a trusted interpreter of mysteries for the king. “It is okay to be disturbed, to be alarmed,” he said. “We are on a common journey, forming a community of confused, unknowing people. But if the vision comes from God, let Him shed light. Beware when humans pretend to interpret mysteries that belong to God.”

Christ Who Burns Our Hearts

The Cardinal drew attention to the Gospel, recalling how Jesus makes ‘our hearts burn within us’ by opening the Scriptures and breaking bread, actions that reveal His very life.

“The Lord spurs us on to mission. He is our future. He is the one pulling our journey to Himself. He is with us, but He is also waiting for us,” Cardinal Tagle proclaimed.

He emphasized that the end of the journey gives meaning to the story: “A life that does not end is not complete. The kingdom awaits those who journey even in confusion. Do we believe in the future that is assured?”

Warnings Against Losing Sight of Christ

Cardinal Tagle cautioned against distractions that dull the heart and obscure the vision of Christ. He named drunkenness, anxiety, material obsession, consumerism, and vanity as forces that drain energy and lead believers away from the Lord.

“We forget about the Lord who is waiting for us when we are busy being anxious,” he warned, urging the faithful instead to pray at all times, remain in communion, and be present to family, the poor, the hungry, the imprisoned, the homeless, and the stranger.

“Jesus is in them,” he continued. “He is the one who will welcome us into the Father’s kingdom.”

At this point, he added with emphasis: “Jesus urges us to be watchful and prayerful. He is the co-journeyer and also our destination.”

Journeying Towards 2033

Looking ahead to the milestone year 2033, Cardinal Tagle assured the faithful that Christ is already preparing to welcome them. “Our companion Jesus is pulling us to Himself. If only we are alert and pray, then we will journey with Him. He is the host of the beautiful house, ready to open the door.”

He concluded with a powerful invitation: “If someone asks where you are going, say: I am going to God the Father. And if they look shocked, ask them: Do you want to come with me? For Jesus is our co-journeyer and also our destination.”

Taking the Church Forward in a Synodal Way

The Great Pilgrimage of Hope 2025 featured an Impact Session with Father Clarence Devadass, who spoke candidly about synodality and its place in the life and mission of the Church. He reminded participants that this was a time of listening, sharing, and discerning together. The aim was to leave with conviction: each participant must ask, “What can I do when I get back?” Synodality, he stressed, is about becoming agents of change in our homes, parishes, dioceses, and communities.

Father Clarence explained that synodality is not a “band-aid” solution to all the Church’s problems. It is not a project, a management programme, or a strategic plan. Rather, it is a spirituality, a way of being Church.

“Since 2021, the word “synodality” has been added to many events and documents, but often without real change in practice. True synodality requires conversion: of mindsets, of relationships, of processes, and of structures. It is not about adding more burdens to priests or parish leaders, but about infusing the spirit of synodality into what is already being done, whether in Eucharist, parish meetings, or assemblies.”

He highlighted three pillars of synodality: communion, participation, and mission. “Communion calls the faithful to unity and to journey together without leaving anyone behind. Participation invites every baptised person to recognise and share their gifts, overcoming exclusion and embracing diversity. Mission reminds the Church that it exists to evangelise, bringing God’s love especially to those at the peripheries.

Synodality, therefore, is not an end in itself but a pathway to transformation and conversion.”

Listening and discernment are central to synodality.

Father Clarence emphasised the importance of listening to one another and to the Holy Spirit, suspending judgement and resisting the urge to provide instant solutions. “Synodality is not parliamentary democracy or majority rule; sometimes the Spirit speaks through the minority voice.” He added that what matters is the process of decision-making, marked by genuine consultation and openness, not token gestures. “Consultation must be sincere, not for show, and must engage the faithful meaningfully in the life of the Church.”

He acknowledged the cultural barriers that make synodality challenging in Asia. “Linguistic diversity complicates even the translation of the word “synodality.” Deep respect for hierarchy can limit accessibility to Church leaders, while patriarchal structures continue to diminish the role of women. Silence and avoidance are also common, with faithful preferring to wait out a parish priest’s tenure rather than engage in dialogue.” He added that these realities must be confronted if synodality is to take root in the region. He noted that servant leadership requires humility and accessibility, not distance or privilege.

Synodality, Father Clarence reminded participants, is not time-bound to 2028 nor dependent solely on Pope Francis. “It is a renewal of the Church’s identity as the People of God. Through baptism, we all share in the threefold ministry of priest, prophet, and king, making every member a stakeholder in the Church’s mission.”

He added that synodality strengthens the Church’s witness, builds unity in diversity, and responds to contemporary challenges such as declining attendance, questions of relevance, and the credibility of the Church in the face of scandal. “It is not about changing doctrine, but about expressing the Church’s identity as the People of God, discerning together what the Spirit is saying.”

Father Clarence also spoke of the need to expand the tent, echoing Pope Francis’ call, highlighting that the challenge is not only to welcome more people, but to open the hearts of those already inside.

“Too often, insiders resist welcoming those who are different, waiting until they are “perfect” before allowing them in. Synodality calls for universal participation, recognising diverse gifts and talents, and moving the faithful from passive recipients to active agents of faith. It is about dialogue, communication, and engagement, both within the Church and with people of other religions and those at the margins.”

He added that synodality is about moving forward in hope, transforming passive recipients into active agents of faith. “It expands the tent, not only to welcome more people but to open the hearts of those already inside.” He stressed that synodality is about mission, communion, and participation to become a Church that listens, discerns, and walks together.

He reminded participants to carry this spirituality home, embodying synodality in daily life and becoming agents of change in their communities. The impact session concluded in a beautiful synodal action of the participants of the impact session saying the Lord’s prayer in their own languages representing the 30 countries present.

Penang, 28 November – On the second day of the Great Pilgrimage of Hope 2025, His Eminence Charles Maung Cardinal Bo, SDB, Archbishop of Yangon and former President of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), delivered a stirring homily during Holy Mass, reflecting on Asia’s journey of faith and hope.

Cardinal Bo began by painting a vivid image of Asia as a “great mosaic, united in diversity.” He reminded the faithful that as people of Asia, we walk together, listening to one another. “The Asian Jesus is listening to Asia,” he said, “but often heard by very few.” Christianity, he noted, has left a profound influence across the continent. Saint Theresa, who “preached without preaching,” brought the passion of Christ to Asia, while education and welfare initiatives left a lasting impression of Jesus among the people.

“We are here to bear witness and proclaim that Christ may be known to more people,” Cardinal Bo urged. He invited the congregation to offer smiles to others, for “faith is a sweet message.” Echoing Pope Francis, he reminded that the joy of the Gospel must reflect in all of us. “Let the Good News start with a smile,” he said, adding that evangelisation begins as art flowing from the heart.

Drawing from Scripture, Cardinal Bo recalled the prophet Daniel, who never lost hope and saw vision in the midst of chaos. “Jesus comes to us in a gentle human and divine form,” he proclaimed. “We are gathered to see Jesus reaching us in Asia. In our synodal journey, we meet the Asian Jesus.”

He spoke of the challenges facing the continent, conflict, displacement, consumerism, and countless digital distractions, yet assured the faithful that the Son of Man continues to walk into our homes and hearts. “He whispers that the world will pass away, but His Word will never pass away.”

Cardinal Bo emphasised that Jesus’ love is a love that listens, heals, and remains when all else fails. “When our life is filled with love, then Jesus returns to us,” he said. He described Christ as present behind the tired mother, the migrant worker, and the young person absorbed in their phone. “He whispers: ‘I recognise this continent.’ But would we recognise Him, or are we too busy, too divided, and too afraid?”

His message, Cardinal Bo stressed, is strong in the midst of a diverse continent waiting for hope. “The Spirit invites us to listen to each other, even when sometimes the path is not clear.”

“I would like to share five points from the Gospel, to guide us in our synodal journey,” Cardinal Bo continued.

First, Listening: the first step is not listening with our ears but with our hearts. “Be quick to listen, slow to speak” (James 1:19). Just like Daniel listened to God in the storm, in our parishes we need less noise and less silence of fear. Listen with our hearts. Imagine our meetings becoming shorter but more impactful.

Second, Leadership: service not status. The Son of Man’s kingdom is built on service. Real authority comes from humility. A true leader washes feet and does not point fingers. Leadership bends low to reach others who are in despair. The synodal journey is one of servant leadership.

Third, Diversity is a gift, not a threat. Asia is diverse in language, cuisine, and culture. Too often, classification of human beings becomes a scandal. Asia will be evangelised when we can shake off cultural barriers. The Church of Asia must be a bridge-builder, not asking who is right but what the Spirit says through each one of us. We must listen to others who come from different accents and backgrounds.

Fourth, Power: the poor are not forgotten. God chose the humble way for His Son to come into the world. We must reflect: where would Jesus live if He came back today? When we look at the slums, among the migrants, poor, and displaced, do we see Jesus? When the Church forgets the poor, it forgets Jesus. Let us remember to look at the barefoot, dusty feet, in whom Jesus is waiting for us.

Fifth, Youth: finding the Church alive and joyful. Like Daniel, Asian youth today are smart, creative, but also restless and searching. They want a Church that listens and not lectures, a Church that dances and praises. If the Church does not give them joy, they will seek it in the scrolling of social media. The Church must accept that the youth may not come to the Church, and the Church must go to the youth. We must open spaces where young people can dance, sing, and praise. We must walk with them as fellow pilgrims of hope, knowing that a Church that walks with the young never grows old.

“At the end, His dominion is everlasting and shall not pass away,” Cardinal Bo assured. “This is the roadmap of the synodal journey in Asia. All else will fade, smartphones and trends, but only the love of God remains.”

He reminded the faithful that in the synodal journey, Jesus comes in the smiles of a child, the service of a priest, the courage of a youth, and the presence of the laity.

“Our journey as one continent of faith calls us to be communities that listen before they speak, to embrace humble leadership, to celebrate diversity in Asia, to never forget the poor, and to ensure the young find the Church alive and joyful. Then Jesus will return to Asia. Our journey together as Asia is a journey in love, fellowship, and humility, for all humanity.”

Cardinal Tagle: Pilgrims of Hope Must Take a Different Way – We Need More Magi, Fewer Herods

“Greetings and blessings to all.” This was the Holy Father’s message to participants of the Great Pilgrimage of Hope 2025, conveyed when Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle informed Pope Leo of his participation.

With that blessing, Cardinal Tagle set the tone for his keynote address: a reminder that Jesus is both the storyteller and the story, the story that changed the whole world.

Drawing from the Gospel of Matthew, he reflected on the Magi who, after encountering the Christ Child, were prompted by a dream to take a different way home. “Their journey was transformed,” Cardinal Tagle said, “and so too must ours be as renewed pilgrims of hope.” This message resonates deeply with the 50th FABC Conference’s theme of journeying together. Like the Magi, the peoples of Asia are invited to discern new paths, not out of avoidance, but out of faith and transformation.

Cardinal Tagle reminded the faithful that Christian hope is not mere optimism or wishful thinking, nor an escape from life’s struggles. “Hope is a theological virtue infused by God’s grace, with God Himself as its final object. We do not simply wish for God; we hope in God.”

This hope, he explained, is profoundly human. “In Jesus, God entered the world to purify our aspirations and orient them toward the Kingdom of Heaven. Hope sustains believers in discouragement, strengthens them in abandonment, and allows them to find joy even in trials.” He added that authentic charity must flow from this hope, purifying human desires and directing them to God’s reign.

The Magi’s pilgrimage, Cardinal Tagle noted, is a classic story of hope, intertwined with the despair of Herod. Unlike Herod, who remained unmoved and blind to creation, the Magi looked to the stars, listened to prophecy, and humbly sought guidance. “Their openness led them to Bethlehem, where the Child welcomed them — Gentiles from afar — as honoured guests.”

Herod, by contrast, plotted destruction. “Hopelessness cannot tolerate the joy of others,” Cardinal Tagle warned, drawing parallels to modern times when reputations are torn down or service is refused where Christ calls. “Today it becomes so easy to ruin someone’s reputation online.”

“We need more Magi and fewer Herods,” Cardinal Tagle urged. “We need copilgrims who, like the Magi, are willing to take a different way, guided not by power or convenience but by humility, discernment, and faith.”

He shared a personal story from an interreligious gathering, where after losing his way, he encountered two women who sought his blessing. “In that moment, I realised I had not been lost at all, Jesus had led me there.”

Cardinal Tagle concluded with a powerful reminder that it was Jesus who went a different way. “He guided the Magi. He chose the path of humility over worldly power. Born in Bethlehem, with no place to lay His head, He taught the truth and revealed Himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is our hope, and in Him, the Great Pilgrimage of Hope finds its meaning.”

Asia’s Catholics Gather in Penang for The Great Pilgrimage of Hope 2025

PENANG, 27 November — In a historic celebration of faith, culture, and communion, over a thousand faithful from churches across 30 countries in Asia gathered in Penang for The Great Pilgrimage of Hope 2025.

This marks the first major continental assembly of the Church in 20 years, held from 27–30 November under the theme “Journeying together as peoples of Asia, and they went a different way” (Mt 2:12). The event is organised by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences – Office of Evangelization (FABCOE).

Hosted by the Diocese of Penang, supported by Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) Asia, and in collaboration with the Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, this historic gathering is part of a broader Vatican initiative. It represents a new chapter in the life of the Church in Asia.

The pilgrimage is envisioned as a moment of communion, discernment, and renewal, echoing Pope Francis’ call for the Church to be “pilgrims of hope” in a world longing for peace and solidarity.

Delegates from across Asia were selected through a structured process and include bishops, priests, religious and deacons, lay faithful, ecclesial movements, youth representatives, women leaders, and Catholic professionals.

Workshops, keynote addresses, impact sessions, rallies, and cultural exchanges highlight the diverse richness of Asia’s Catholic communities, while fostering dialogue on evangelization in today’s rapidly changing societies.

Keynote speakers include Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, Archbishop Simon Poh, Mar Raphael Thattil, Archbishop Christopher Prowse, Colin Calmiano, and other notable voices, each offering insights into renewal, reconciliation, and discipleship in a post-pandemic, post-globalisation era.

A highlight of the pilgrimage will be the solemn Eucharistic celebration at St. Anne Minor Basilica, Bukit Mertajam, on 29 November. Declared Malaysia’s first minor basilica in 2023, the shrine is a beloved site of devotion and now becomes the spiritual heart of this continental gathering.

The Mass will be presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization. The liturgy will be followed by a concert featuring international Catholic artists, including Fr. Rob Galea and Rexband, offering music that lifts hearts in praise and thanksgiving.

In his welcome address, Cardinal Sebastian reflected: “Just as the three wise men, pilgrims from the East, came to meet the newborn infant Jesus in Bethlehem and returned to their lands by a different path, so too are we invited by this theme to discern and walk together in synodality, embracing new pathways of being Church in Asia, rooted in fraternity and a shared mission.”

He added that this gathering comes as the Universal Catholic Church prepares to bring the Jubilee Year of Hope to its fulfilment in December 2025, while looking ahead with anticipation to World Youth Day in Seoul, Korea in 2027, and the culmination of the Synod on Synodality in Rome in 2028.

“The communion among us and the continuation of the mission is truly a gift we will celebrate and carry forward,” he said. “Yes, we are Asian Catholics. The Asian Mission Congress in Chiang Mai 2006 reminded us that we Asians are storytellers at heart. We have a story to share with Asia and beyond, as Global Asians, pilgrims and storytellers.

The greatest story ever told is of Jesus Christ. It is a simple and pure story which continues to this very day and beyond. The Holy Spirit, given freely to all who seek and love God with an open heart, will continue to tell this story in Asia and beyond.”

George Pallipparambil SDB, Bishop of Miao and Chairman of FABC OE, in his keynote address, said: “We have come as part of the Jubilee Pilgrimage to thank God and show our love and appreciation for our faith and cultures, as well as to commit ourselves to the Lord’s call to make the world a better place by being salt, leaven, and light” (cf. Mt 5:13–14; Mt 13:33; Lk 13:21). “By being agents of change, we can create a new world where there will be peace and justice.”

The Gospel of Matthew recounts: “And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back by another route” (Mt 2:12). The Magi, having encountered the Christ Child, could not simply retrace their steps. Their meeting with the Lord transformed them, compelling them to walk a new way, a path shaped by faith and renewal.

In much the same spirit, the Great Pilgrimage beckons us to follow suit. Like the Magi, we too have encountered Christ, through the sacraments, within our communities, and amid the trials of daily life. This encounter calls us to journey differently: with hearts rekindled in hope, with compassion deepened, and with a renewed commitment to serve.

For Malaysia, hosting the Great Pilgrimage of Hope is both a privilege and a responsibility. It places the nation at the centre of Asia’s Catholic journey, highlighting its role in fostering dialogue, unity, and evangelization.

As pilgrims walk together in faith, The Great Pilgrimage of Hope 2025 stands as a living witness to the Church’s mission in Asia: to journey together, to celebrate diversity, and to radiate hope for the future.

The Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur joyfully celebrated the ordination of two new deacons, a moment of grace and thanksgiving for the local Church.

On this blessed occasion, Bro. Philip Asirwalam and Bro. Anthony Robert were ordained to the Sacred Order of the Diaconate at the Church of St Anthony, Kuala Lumpur, surrounded by clergy, religious, family, and faithful who gathered in prayerful witness.

Deacon Philip Asirwalam is from the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Jalan Peel, Kuala Lumpur, and currently resides at the Church of the Divine Mercy, Shah Alam.

Deacon Anthony Robert is from the Church of St Jude, Rawang, and currently resides at the Church of Christ the Light, Desa Jaya.
Both began their formation in philosophy at College General, Penang (2018–2019), and continued with theology at St Peter’s College, Kuching (2021–2025).

Their ordination strengthens the Archdiocese’s mission, as they are entrusted with proclaiming the Gospel through their ministry and service, walking in synodality with the community, and reaching out to those in need with Christ-like compassion.

This milestone is not only a blessing for their home parishes but also a sign of hope for the wider Archdiocese, as they continue their journey toward priesthood. We give thanks to God for their vocations and the gifts they bring to the Church.

Archbishop Julian Leow, presiding over the ordination, offered his heartfelt message as our two newly ordained deacons begin their ministry of service to the People of God:
“May Deacon Philip and Deacon Anthony be strengthened by the Holy Spirit in their ministry of service. May their witness inspire others to respond generously to God’s call, and may the Lord continue to guide them toward priesthood with faith and perseverance.”

Walking Together in Communion: Asia’s Journey of Faith, Dialogue, and Renewal

Father Clarence Devadasan from Malaysia, representing the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conference (FABC) Synodol team, reported on synodality in Asia. He stated that synodality, defined as 'walking together as a church in communion, participation, and mission,' has found fertile ground in Asia, a continent marked by religious pluralism, cultural diversity, and complex socio-political realities. Its impact is particularly profound due to the region's unique ecclesial and societal context. He outlined six positive impacts and six challenges for synodality in Asia.The positive impacts include a renewed emphasis on inter-religious and intercultural dialogue, essential for peaceful coexistence in a region where Christians are often minorities. It has led to the empowerment of the laity, especially women and youth, in church leadership and decision-making, affirming their baptismal dignity. Synodality has strengthened local churches by encouraging them to articulate unique challenges, leading to contextualized theology. It has sparked spiritual renewal, with basic Christian communities transforming into human and ecological communities. Digital platforms have become vital for engagement, especially among the young, enabling broader participation. Finally, the process has strengthened continental bonds and inspired deeper collaboration across Asia, coinciding with FABC's 50th anniversary.Challenges include conceptual ambiguity, as the term 'synodality' is difficult to translate and communicate across diverse linguistic and cultural landscapes. Clericalism and resistance to change pose a significant hurdle, as some clergy perceive it as a threat to traditional authority. There is a pressing need for formation and capacity building for clergy, religious, and laity to ensure meaningful engagement. Minority status and political pressures in regions with religious extremism limit public expressions of synodality. Structural limitations mean many dioceses lack the infrastructure to sustain synodal practices, requiring renewal and a shift towards participatory leadership. Lastly, economic and technological inequalities risk excluding the poor and marginalized from the synodal process.

Q - Fr CD: Holy Father, what message would you like to share with the churches in Asia to encourage synodal conversion?

A - Pope Leo:

“The first thing that comes to mind, is that I will like to say thank you to the church in Asia. Because if any one will have a challenge because of language, cultural differences and geographical distance, poverty and many other realities that you face.

To have worked as hard as you have and come where you are today in living this process not only of synodality but promoting communion and conversion, I think we all should say thank you and congratulations to you.

Dialogue you said is essential for peaceful coexistence. And I think because of the many inter-religious realities which are so widespread, Christianity being a minority in Asia and to face the challenges that come along in terms of living the faith and being disciples of Jesus Christ including in places where there is oppression and where it is difficult to live the faith.

I think there are many things that all of us need to bow down to and to respect the holy ground that Asia is for us, the present and future of the church.

There is a sense of mystery and understand of divine which I think is part of many of the religions in Asia that opens the doors to different kinds of inter-religious dialogues. And I think is a treasure for the whole church, eastern and western. I also believe is something that is valued by so many cultures in Asia that we also could learn from.

And because of that when we talk about the spirit of synodality and conversation in the spirit, a mystical or contemplative element to that, perhaps we could continue to discover and I won’t say understand, as it goes far beyond understanding but contact with the divine that we can all learn from in Asia.

There are of course great challenges. The structural, economical realities that you deal with and the difficulty of even promoting communications on a widespread level because of the limitation of the local churches, are realities that we too need to share.

I think that this kind of experience of a synodal church, of building communion, needs to inspire in all of us if you will a greater generosity in sharing of resources so that we can have perhaps greater equality, greater justice even in terms of the goods and blessings that some many churches have could be shared with others. Obviously there are great challenges in doing that, there are great efforts being made, should be recognised, it’s an ongoing process.

But I think again the people of Asia can offer much hope. And I hope that all of us together can be a hope for the church in Asia. With that I simple express gratitude and great reverence for those who are walking together for the church in Asia.”

“We love the Church and that is why we are here, both in person and online. This love is not passive, it expresses itself through tenderness toward those who feel excluded and through fidelity to the Church. Love goes hand in hand with faith. We do not merely love the Church, we believe in her.

In the synodal journey, this love and faith call us to radical listening, to all the People of God, especially the marginalized. Faith anchors us in truth. Hope, meanwhile, points us toward the future. It reminds us that not everything is complete, yet it assures us that the Church has a future and so do we.

This hope denotes a sense of mission, a mission that comes from God and leads to God. It is a reminder that the future belongs to Him, and we are in His hands. Our hope is rooted in Jesus Christ and in the certainty of what He has promised. It invites us to let go, to surrender, and to trust that the future is greater than the past and present, because it is primarily God’s future.

In the synodal journey, hope sustains us. It calls us to act with liberty and humility, to do our part without limiting the future by our present understanding. We know that the future belongs to God, who heals our imperfections. As the Gospel of Luke reminds us: “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.” The rest belongs to God. The future is His.

We hope because we have encountered the One who holds the future. This is key to understanding the synodal process. There is more to be done, and much will unfold in meetings and discernment. Yet not all is ours to complete. We have done our part, and the rest is in God’s hands.

The Church belongs to God. He will complete, change, and perfect what we have begun. This characterizes our Jubilee celebration, the implantation of the fruits of the Synod. It is a hope not based on our dreams or ideas, but on the conviction that the Church is God’s Church. Hope loves what has not yet come, what will unfold in the future and in eternity.”

Shalom, thought I'll share this for World Mission Sunday.

Pastoral Conversion for Our Parishes is Essential

When I was installed as the Ordinary of the Diocese 12 years ago, I proposed this vision for the Archdiocese, “To build a vibrant, evangelising and missionary church”. But we cannot achieve this vision if parishes themselves do not undertake pastoral conversion. What do we mean by “pastoral conversion”? It refers to the way a parish functions and forms her parishioners for the work of evangelisation.

It is important to ask ourselves, are our parishes places of evangelising presence, formation and witness? If we are not, how do we get there?

~Firstly, our parishes need to cultivate a culture of encounter. A parish is a community of communities. It is the first place where people encounter Jesus through the body of Christ. Do our parishes currently provide the space for our people to be spirit-filled and build relationships?

~Secondly, a parish is where people grow in faith, from conversion to maturity to mission. It is where people receive lifelong formation, to be trained and be equipped to become evangelisers. Our parishes need to be places of ongoing and lifelong formation, so that our people can become missionary disciples.

~Thirdly, a parish must have a presence in its neighbourhood and beyond. It is important that a missionary parish exists not only for its members, but for the larger community and the world.

~Lastly, parishes need to help each other. We need to look beyond our own parish and reach out to other parishes across the diocese. We are all on one mission. It is not about my church, it is �� church. We need to build each other up, to collaborate and synergise with one another, to work towards the same goal.

Although this journey is filled with struggles, I believe the Holy Spirit is at work.

....Let us journey together so that every parish can be a place where Christ is encountered and shared.

Archbishop Julian Leow, the clergy and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur extend our deepest condolences to the members of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin Malaysia on the passing of Fr Jonathan OFM Cap in India on 9 August 2023.

Fr Jonathan OFM Cap faithfully served in Malaysia in the late 1970s and 1980s in various capacities, among them being with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, at the Church of St Francis of Assisi, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, the Church of the Visitation, Seremban, and in many other places. He was also a lecturer at the College General Major Seminary, Penang.

His tireless service to the Church will be etched in the minds and hearts of many people whose lives he touched through his zeal and dedication to promoting the Gospel.

May the Lord in his mercy, cause his light to shine upon Fr Jonathan OFM Cap, and grant his soul eternal peace and joy.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the demise of our dear Reverend Father Dr Michael Teng Woon Pheng (aged 62), at approximately 11.09 am on 25th August 2023 at Graceville, MAJODI Centre, Jalan Masai, Plentong, Johor. Fr. Michael Teng had had cancer for several years before his demise.

Details of the official wake and funeral are as follows:

The body of the late Rev. Fr. Dr Michael Teng will arrive on the evening of 25 August 2023 and be placed at the Cathedral for the wake mass:

- Wake Mass: Friday, 25th August 2023,

It is with profound sadness that we inform of the demise of Mr. E. Samson, a former Director of Cahayasuara Communications Centre., who passed away on 17 April 2023.

Mr. Samson Irudayam, fondly known as E. Samson, was a founding employee of the Cahayasuara Communications Centre (CCC), the Social Communications Ministry of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, when it was established in 1967.

Beginning in the early 1980s, Mr. Samson was a radio and television English newsreader for Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) for nearly three decades and was often called upon to do voice-overs for arch/diocesan and parish-related video productions. He was also a much sought after Master of Ceremonies for church events.

In September 1984, he was named director of Cahayasuara Communications Centre (CCC) by the then Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Most Reverend Anthony Soter Fernandez (later His Eminence Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez), making him the first layperson to lead a ministry in the Archdiocese.

Mr. E. Samson was instrumental in the development of social communications within the Archdiocese. Mr. Samson was also in charge of teaching seminarians’ social communication skills while serving as director. Apart from that, as a member of the Peninsular Malaysian Pastoral Team, he helped organise the Peninsular Malaysia Pastoral Assembly and associated events, such as the Bishop's Road Show in the 1990s. He also collaborated on numerous Archdiocesan Pastoral projects with Archbishop Soter, as well as on the Vatican Pastoral directives on Social Communications.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Samson was the local Church's go-to symbol for media and communication. In August 2001, he announced his retirement.

In 2021, Mr. Samson wrote a coffee-table book "The Cardinal", in which he recalled his strong connection with the late Cardinal Soter, and his encounters with him.

He leaves behind his spouse, Mdm. Esther, children Priscilla, Damian, Shyamini, three grandchildren, relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.

The wake is being held today at No.6, Lorong Udang Pasir 2, Taman Cuepacs, Sri Segambut, 52000, Kuala Lumpur and there will be a wake prayer at 8:30 pm.

The funeral Mass will take place at the Church of Jesus Caritas, Jalan Burung Hantu, Taman Kepong, 52100 Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, 19 April 2023, at 10:30 am. The cortege then leaves for final rites and burial at the Cheras Christian Cemetery, Jalan Kuari, Kuala Lumpur.

We extend our deepest condolences to Monsignor James Gnanapiragasam, Priest in residence of the Church of St Joseph, Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, on the demise of his brother-in-law Mr. Stephen Eldin Dionisappu who passed away peacefully on 14 April 2023 at the age of 81.

He leaves behind his spouse, Mdm. Philomena Gnanapragasam, three children, relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.

The wake will be held today at the funeral parlour at the Church of Visitation, 85A Jalan Yam Tuan, 70000 Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm and on Sunday, 16 April 2023, from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

She leaves behind two brothers, one sister, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, three nieces, a nephew, relatives, and friends who will miss her dearly.
