Asian Bishops Meet to Renew Faith and Fight Corruption

Asian Catholic leaders gathered in Jakarta for the 12th Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) assembly, calling for decisive internal reform and active societal engagement. The bishops urged clergy and lay members to collaborate equally in addressing internal abuses, while also developing a practical guide to help Catholics combat political and social corruption across the region.

Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo of Jakarta stressed human dignity, dialogue, and environmental care, encouraging local churches to embrace regional languages, traditions, and music for a distinctly Asian expression of faith. Highlighting Jakarta's Cathedral and the adjacent national mosque—connected by a "Tunnel of Friendship"—he recalled President Sukarno's vision of both sites standing side by side in harmony, not conflict. Ultimately, the prelate implored the Church to alleviate poverty, protect the marginalised, and foster peaceful coexistence.
