Precautionary Measures in View of the Current Haze Situation
ADVISORY TO ALL PARISHES
In view of the current haze situation and the potential impact on respiratory health, and on the directive of Archbishop Julian Leow, all parishes are requested to observe the following precautionary measures this weekend (10 & 11 October 2026):
- Outdoor Activities: All outdoor parish activities should be suspended or avoided during this weekend as a precautionary measure.
- Catechism Classes: Catechism classes may proceed as scheduled, provided they are conducted indoors and the premises are safe and conducive. As a precautionary measure, all outdoor catechism classes must be suspended for this weekend. Should the haze situation worsen in certain areas, parish priests, in consultation with their respective parish catechetical teams, may exercise their discretion to suspend all catechism classes.
- Use of Face Masks: Parishioners are strongly advised to wear face masks when attending church, particularly in areas where air quality is poor and for those who may be more susceptible to the effects of the haze.
- The Elderly and Vulnerable: The elderly, those with respiratory difficulties, and those whose health may be adversely affected by exposure to the haze have been granted dispensation by Archbishop Julian Leow from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday, 11 October 2026. They are encouraged to participate in the celebration of Mass online, where available. While online participation does not ordinarily replace physical attendance at Mass, this dispensation is granted as a precautionary measure in the present circumstances to safeguard their health and well-being.
Let us continue to pray for one another, especially for the elderly, the vulnerable, and all those affected by the haze. We continue to pray for the haze situation to improve and come to an end soon.
Rev Fr Dr Clarence Devadass
Chancellor
Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur
Please note that this advisory may be revised depending on the prevailing haze situation. Parishes are advised to remain vigilant and follow any other updates or instructions issued by the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur.
